How GST is calculated

Adding GST (price → total)

GST = Price × Rate ÷ 100
Total = Price + GST

₹1,000 at 18% → GST ₹180 → Total ₹1,180

Removing GST (total → base)

Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
GST = Total − Base

₹1,180 incl. 18% → Base ₹1,000 → GST ₹180

GST rate slabs (2025)

The GST 2.0 reform (Sept 2025) simplified the structure to mainly three slabs, plus exempt and a 40% sin/luxury slab.

RateCommon items
0%Fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, unbranded rice/wheat/pulses, salt, books, newspapers
5%Most medicines, packed/branded food, tea, coffee, fertilisers, footwear & apparel up to the price threshold
18%Most goods & services — electronics, mobiles, cement, paint, soap, shampoo, ACs, hotels, professional services
40%Sin & luxury goods — tobacco, pan masala, aerated & sugary drinks, and premium/luxury items

Indicative examples only — confirm the exact rate for your product against the latest CBIC notification.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

Which tax applies depends on whether the sale crosses a state border. The total GST is the same — only the split differs.

CGSTSame-state sale

Central GST

Half of the total GST, paid to the Central Government.

Delhi → Delhi at 18% → CGST 9%

SGSTSame-state sale

State GST

The other half of the total GST, paid to the State Government.

Delhi → Delhi at 18% → SGST 9%

IGSTInterstate sale

Integrated GST

The full GST rate as a single tax, collected by the Central Government and shared with the destination state.

Delhi → Mumbai at 18% → IGST 18%

FAQ

Frequently asked GST questions

Common questions about GST calculation, rates and compliance for Indian businesses.

11 answersUpdated Q2 2026
  • GST basics

    What does 18% GST mean — with an example?

    On a ₹1,000 product, 18% GST is ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. For a same-state sale that splits into CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90; for an interstate sale it is a single IGST of ₹180.

  • GST basics

    What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive?

    Exclusive means GST is not yet in the price and is added on top. Inclusive means GST is already in the price and only needs to be extracted. Use 'Add GST' for exclusive prices and 'Remove GST' for inclusive ones.

  • GST basics

    Is GST included in the MRP?

    Yes. In India the MRP on packaged goods is the final consumer price and already includes GST. Use 'Remove GST' to see the base price and the tax inside it.

  • CGST / SGST / IGST

    Are CGST and SGST always equal?

    Yes. On a same-state sale, CGST and SGST are always exactly half each of the total GST — 18% becomes CGST 9% + SGST 9%.

  • CGST / SGST / IGST

    What is the difference between interstate and intrastate GST?

    Intrastate (same state) attracts CGST + SGST in equal halves. Interstate (different states) attracts a single IGST at the full rate. The total tax is the same either way — only the split differs.

  • Rates

    What is the GST rate on footwear and apparel?

    Both are price-band based: at or below the per-piece/per-pair threshold the lower slab applies, and above it the higher slab. A discount that drops the price below the threshold moves it to the lower slab.

  • Rates

    What is the GST rate on medicines?

    Most retail medicines attract 5%, and a list of lifesaving drugs is exempt. Some medical devices sit higher. Verify the specific product against its HSN code.

  • Compliance

    When is GST registration required?

    Generally when turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (lower in special-category states). Interstate supply and e-commerce sales can require registration regardless of turnover.

  • Compliance

    What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

    ITC is the GST you paid on purchases, which you set off against the GST you collect on sales. Net GST payable = GST collected − ITC. Your supplier must have filed their GSTR-1 for you to claim it.

  • Compliance

    What is the penalty for late GST filing?

    ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST), capped at ₹5,000 per return, plus 18% annual interest on unpaid tax. A nil return is ₹20 per day, capped at ₹500.

  • Using Accountune

    How do I avoid calculating GST on every invoice?

    Use Accountune: set each product's GST rate once, and every invoice computes the GST and the correct CGST/SGST/IGST split automatically — with GSTR reports ready to file.
